US Army Artillery Unit questions..?
I am personally interested in joining the army active duty (MOS being Cannon Crewmember). I was just wandring what do Cannon Crewmembers do when not deployed, for they cant just shoot cannon's all day, every day, due to expenses. Also 2nd ? what do Artillery Units do during deployment and wartime. Yes I know they give support , and launch missles, artillery shells, etc... but what do they do when they arnt blowing stuff up... because alot of the time they will go weeks without shooting one shell... what do they do during this time... also how do they get their cannons into position? do they just hook them up to humvee's n drive them on the roads?
I will answer your question but I have one for you first. Do you like more action or more relaxing? If you like more action go to Bragg, Cambell, Drum or Hawaii. They are more hard charging and have a sense of Comraderie.
While not deployed artillery soldiers are usually training, or perfecting the motorpool for inspections while they are not in the Field. But when you do go to the field get ready to fire at the most inconvenient times (like falling over dead tired) because we all know in combat there is no clock.
While deployed, depending on your unit. In 2003 I fired Artillery for 4 months, after that I got lucky enough to be picked for our recon/patrol team that ran the Iranian border.
Second deployment my whole battalion went to Iraq working for a Transportation Battalion. we were convoy security for KBR. the Trans guys just told us what to do. Artillery men are the most tossed around MOS in the Army. they can be put into any situation and expected to excell.
Getting the cannons into position? depends which cannon it is. if it is the M119 (pulled by a humvee) you put it in place by hand. you use the humvee to get it close. The same situation goes for the M198 and M777(USMC) but it is pulled by a 5-ton. and then you have Mechanized and it drives into position. The driver listens to the Cheif and the cheif guides the driver where it needs to be by watching the onboard computer. Being a 13B was fun but I will tell you this, if you get hurt don't play Rambo, get checked out or you will be screwed like me, trying to prove that your injuries came from the Army.
