A cruise boat travels84 miles downstream in2 hours and returns upstream in6 hours. Find the rate of the stream.
Let b the speed of the boat in still water and s be the speed of the stream. Then the speed going with the current is (b+s) = 84/2 miles per hour, and the speed against the current is (b-s)=84/6 miles per hour. Solve the system for b and s. The answer is s.
