Hi Tom, This is something else Mo took from the OT, although he couldn't remember very many details about it @ all, except for the moon being a part of it & used it for his purpose. Remember he had both Testaments read to him & evidently he remembered something from The Holy Bible about the moon when some pagans asked him to perform a miracle. What he "somewhat recalled" was when Joshua asked God in Joshua 10:12-14 this:
12Then Joshua spoke to the Lord in the day when the Lord delivered up the Amorites before the the children of Israel, and he said in the sight of Israel: "Sun stand still over Gibeon; and Moon, in the valley of Aijalon." 13So the sun stood still, and the MOON stopped, till the people had revenge upon their enemies. Is this not written in the Book of Jasher? So the sun stood still in the midst of heaven, and did not hasten to go down for about a whole day. 14And there has been no day like that, before it or after it, that the Lord heeded the voice of a man; for the Lord fought for Israel. (Joshua 10:12-14, NKJV; emphasis in caps are mine).
I really would like to start keeping a tally of just how many passages Mu took from The Holy Bible & distorted & got them mixed up & had them incorporated into his book.
Now about Mu splitting the moon into. The Ahadith clearly show that this was nothing but an optical illusion. Some of the pagans bought into it, others did not.
Sahih Muslim Book 039, Number 6725 "This hadith has been transmitted on the authority of Abdullah b. Mas'ud (who said): We were along with Allah' Messenger (may peace be upon him) at Mina, that the moon was split up into two. ONE OF ITS PARTS WAS BEHIND THE MOUNTAIN AND THE OTHER ONE WAS ON THIS SIDE OF THE MOUNTAIN. Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) said to us: Bear witwitness to this." (Emphasis in caps is mine).
Sahih Muslim Book 039, Number 6726 "Abdullah b. Mas'ud reported that the moon was split up in two parts during the lifetime of Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him). THE MOUNTAIN COVERED ONE OF ITS PARTS AND ONE PART OF IT WAS ABOVE THE MOUNTAIN and Allah's Messenger (may peace be upon him) said: Bear witness to this." (Emphasis in caps is mine).
(There are other Ahadiths about Mu "splitting the moon into". I'll include a couple more which I believe to be sufficient to prove once again what kind of man Mu was). The above Hadiths clarifies that the moon is actually seen rising from behind a mountain where the top half is visible & the bottom is part is not. Even then, the moon's reflection upon a body of water could make it appear that the moon was being split in two with the mountain in between, again, due to the optical illusion caused by the way the moon's reflection is perceived, such as mentioned in the above Hadiths).
Sahih Bukhari, Volume 5 Book 58, Number 208, Narrated by Anas bin Malik: "The people of Mecca asked Allah's Apostle to show them a miracle. SO HE SHOWED THEM THE MOON SPLIT IN TWO HALVES BETWEEN WHICH THEY SAW THE HIRAM MOUNTAIN." (Emphasis in caps is mine).
Sahih Bukhari, Volume 5, Book 58, Number 209, Narrated by Abdullah: "The moon was split into two pieces while we were in Mina. He said, 'Be witnesses.' THEN A PIECE OF THE MOON WENT TOWARD THE MOUNTAIN." (Emphasis in caps is mine).
What the people saw was the moon rising half way from behind the Hiram mountain casting its reflection upon a body of water . The top half of the moon was visible ABOVE the Hiram mountain & the moon's reflection was cast upon a body of water in a FRONT of the mountain---causing the mountain to appear to be in the middle. This explains Bukhari Volume 5 Book 58 Number 208. AND > >> In Bukhahi Vol. 5 Book 58 # 209, its still the same illusion, except that when the moon continued to rise higher ABOVE the mountain (which would have been due to the earth's rotation), the moon's reflection upon the water diminishes & moves toward the mountain; thus, the statement: 'A PIECE OF THE MOON WENT TOWARDS THE MOUNTAIN".
This was only an optical illusion! We see this all of the time! Gosh, it is so unbelieveable that people believe this! Mu was not a Prophet of the one & only true God! The people there who believed Mu's stupid lie & those today who still believe it wanted/want to believe it knowing full well it did not occur; with the exception of those there who didn't believe him & X-Muslims.
Just because large as well as small demarkation lines & cracks exist on the moon absolutely doesn't mean someone cut it in two as one answerer stated here! Please Muslims stop telling children right now this hilarous lie.
The only miracles that were ever done were by Jesus Christ, God Incarnate, while He was here on earth & by some of His chosen Prophets whom He gave the power to do them. None of those Prophets did them on their own.
I suggest Muslims e-mail NASA with their quote "evidence that the moon was cut in two" & hear what they have to say.
