How do you properly use a bore guide when cleaning a rifle?
I have started reading about accuracy and the importance of properly cleaning your rifle. Can anyone tell me how to properly use a bore guide / rod guide?

You have two types of cleaning rod guides.
For bolt action rifles, where the bolt can be removed, you insert the cleaning rod guide into where the bolt was, and guide your rod completely through the bore, no back and forth scrubbin actions!
For semi-automatic rifles (like the Garand and M14/M1A) there is a guide that slips over the muzzle to guide the cleaning rod, agaling, you can use a good cleaning fluid, in, no back and forth scrubbing. For semi-automatic rifles, like the AR15, separate the upper from lower receiver, remove the bolt, and insert your rod guide, just like a bolt action rifle.
Use a good quality bore cleaner, such as Hoppes or Shooter's Choice. If there is a significant amount of jacket fouling, use a good jacket fouling cleaner such as Sweet's 7.62 to clean the fouling, then oil the bore or expect rust! If you also want to maintain your rifle's accuracy, track the rounds, just like the military shooters and top competitor's do! When I was active in my competitive shooting (pre-accident) a .30 barrel was expected to have an accuracy life of 3,000 rounds, a .22 (centerfire, not rimfire) barrel was projected to have an accuracy life of about 5,000 rounds.
If you also want to keep a closer check on your barrel's accuracy, get a headspace guage, and headspace the barrel after every 500 to 1,000 rounds, and always inspect the muzzle crown dor dents, scrathes, gouges and dings!
