Are butt plates for paintball a good substitute for stocks and are there good websites to find them cheap?
I'm going to paintball in a few days and I have a Tippmann 98 Custom. I was wondering if butt plates are a good substitute for a stock and if they work? also if you can give me some good websites that will be greatly appreciated.
Yes and no. It is dependent upon how you prefer to hold your marker. On a 98C (as with most markers) putting a butt plate on your marker will elevate the marker barrel slightly above your line of sight, creating an opposite of the normal parallax (the difference in line of sight and trajectory) that you experience, especially with a stock. It will also, in turn, elevate your hopper well above your head, so you need to keep that in mind with the bunkers.
Another drawback is field of vision. Already the field of vision is hindered by the hopper, stock or none. Happens to be on the dominant side which will, for most people, be that of their dominant eye. With the butt plate, though you are pushing the marker forward, you are putting the entire broad side of your marker in your field of vision.
The biggest difference between the butt plate and the stock, besides price, is that butt plates are primarily designed for aggressive players as it is difficult to sneak with your marker above your head. Stocks are much, much more versatile.
Personally, I would suggest a 5-9 point collapsing CAR stock if you wanted to spend the money... buy after-market. But since you are looking for a butt plate, and I understand having a typical $70 difference, here is a nice little website for ya.
