Flying Goggles
How reliable are night vision goggles and fly-by-wire systems?
I clocked up about 120 hours when I could afford to be an amateur pilot. It would have really pissed me off if everything had suddenly gone black. What's the chance of this happening with night vision goggles, instruments like altimeters which are just LCD displays in aircraft like the 777 and, oh yeah, planes and computers both crash. You can't just pull over to the side of the road and ring the AA when your A380's electronics throw a wobbly. Have things like this ever happened? And now, passenger airliners with only two engines fly over oceans. How safe is this?
The reliability of these of these systems are pretty good overall. While it is possible for them to fail completely, there are usually backup systems inplace. And example would be the NVGs, where a backup battery is in place so if one fails, a flip of a switch and the next one is working. There are also procedures in place for what do in the event of NVG failure.
Fly by wire systems are the same type. Most of them are "quad redundant/dual operative". This means there are 4 parts to the fly by wire system, and only two are needed for the plane to fly. This allows for two complete failures and the aircraft will still safely be able to recover safely.
