German Stug Panzer
Is the most common or produced in German WW2 Tank / Tank Destroyer / GSP Stug III or Panzer IV Tank?
I know they produced a large number of SPG Stug with short L/24 originally designed to support infantry with direct fire and most L/43 & later, 7.5 L/48 guns, mainly produced as a kind of anti armor / artillery (multi) role. I know they produced three Sturmgeschütz Panzer III chassis and Stug IV on the Panzer IV chassis. I know Michael Whittmann original was a crew member of one, but that's all. Does anyone know Stug much on GSP. You soon John.
Most furs Gepanzerte Selbstahrlafette Sturmgeschütz (Stug) were built on the chassis Panzerkampfwagen III medium tank, and represented the majority (about 10,000) of 15,000 chassis built in 1945. Stug was originally conceived as an armor protected self-propelled artillery for use in close support operations. They were not a general support of the division artillery as Wespe or a priest and have not been issued to Panzer divisions. Instead, they formed independent Sturmartillerie Abteilung (battalion artillery), held at the group or body and distributed to support military attacks by infantry divisions to strengthen the individual or divisions Panzer necessary. These vehicles are fortified enemy attack with direct fire - anti-tank guns, machine guns and other entrenched positions, etc., in cooperation with the infantry. In this they were similar in the role of the independent tank battalions American GHQ. Design appropriate the role - low-rise (about that of a man standing), an sufficient armor to protect against enemy artillery and anti-tank guns (25-37mm) and a short, low speed of 7.5 cm Stuk 37 L24 gun, which was virtually identical to 7 .5 cm KwK 37 L24 gun of the Panzerkampfwagon IV "heavy" tank. The two fired ammunition 75x243R same. The experience of fighting on the eastern front have shown that the ability to cope weave of the enemy was desirable so that the Stug was shot up with the first-rate high-7.5cm Stuk 40 weapon originally with a barrel of L43 and shooting 75x495R juicy and later with a L48 version of the same weapon and performance almost identical. The projectiles fired from this weapon was more powerful almost identical to the original low speed L24 weapon so there was little loss of capacity to support nearby. In later production, though some Stug 1200 were eventually equipped with weapons firing standard ammunition 10.5cm stuh leFH Haubitz to return a portion of the fire support (Vice anti-tank) ability to the vehicle. In 1943, the Panzerkampfwagen III tank was obsolete but the Stug was always very helpful (and about 25% cheaper produce) so when the production closed tank every effort has been devoted to the Stug place until the end of the war. Krupp also produed a number of Stug later in the war as a stop-gap to make up for the damage to the plant Stug III Alkett. Since Krupp did not make the III Pzr they used the chassis instead Pzr IV, just slapped a Stug III bunker on top. As the production of tanks and Panzerjäger failed to meet demand for replacements, not to mention the creation of new units in 1944 Stug began to be issued to Panzer Abteilung up tanks (Usually in place of Panther) and it was not uncommon for a Panzerjäger Abteilung Kompanie to be fitted instead Stug preference or Jagdpanzer Hetzer Jagpanzer IV. The Stug disadvanates had many in the anti-tank role, having been designed as an assualt weapon, not a killer tanks. The Jagdpanzer IV almost closed the gap between the Panzerjäger and Sturmartillerie and it probably would have replaced the Stug production the entire war had continued. Wittman began in armored cars in Poland in 1939. He moved to Stug for the invasion of France and Barbarossa in 1940. In 1943 he was promoted to the Tiger I and marked the lion's share of his tank kills during "good times" of six months of 1943, when the tiger has dominated a target rich environment and the Soviet counter was little.
