Have you ever grown a real beard other than a soul patch or mustache?
I have not, every time it gets to a certain point itches too much. I tried a couple times couldnt handle it for more than a week-
what are some other downsides to having a beard, [the more unusual the better]

In the 90s I went several years without getting haircut or shaving. (I was protesting.) I'm 6-02, 220 and people would cross the street because I looked just too darned scary with that beard; like a crazed biker or something. But it's like having a pet; hard to keep clean, in the way, definitely more trouble than any fashion statement is worth.
Nowadays I keep it trimmed to less than 1/2", shaving only cheeks and neck. This is the best low-maintenance solution. It seems neat and tidy, yet if you don't shave for a day or two it doesn't look too bad. Form follows function! Short hair is also more practical.
