What is a good DSLR camera?

Hi,

I recently got an interest in outdoor portraits and occasional event photos (weddings, parties) .. people tell me to invest in a DSLR camera instead of a point and shoot because of a few critical areas (external flash capability, image quality, RAW) .. however with so much information I'm very confused as to what to get.

I've been looking at Canon, and Nikon.. I want to be able to print large photos too.. I'm familiarized with a few basics about photography.. but thats about it .. I would really like a recomendation.. I did notice that external flash produce clearer pictures because sometimes internal flash ones make them look like moody, and skin tones show more defects than with the external flash... I noticed that its rare when a photograph needs editing when taken with the external flash.

But returning to the purpose, for example I've been looking at the Canon Rebel XS and the Canon D60, I'm still unclear with the lenses, but the camera worries me more

Have you considered using a film SLR Camera-there are some excellent examples at really low prices on e-Bay. I have an old Pentax which takes excellent photographs, certainly to a professional standard- of course developing is a cost but modern high speed processing is excellent
