School Geiger

have i exposed myself to dangerous radiation ?

i was helping out in my schools open day today. i went into the physics lab and noticed a geiger muller tube. beside it was a opened thin glass jar. on top of it was the plastic lid which was connected to a piece of metal. the jar said radioactive. i held the plastic lid up putting the lid in front of the geiger muller tube getting a result. my teacher told me to put it down and that it was only for him to do because he probably wont live that much longer. do you think i have given myself a dangerous dose of radiation ? it was only in a thin glass jar so it probably wasn't that strong. it was left out for the teacher to demonstrate and it didn't make the machine buzz very much and i only held the plastic handle but i am still very worried does anyone know about this kind of radiation and if i will be ok.

While it is never wise to expose oneself unnecessarity to a radioactive source, especially for long period of time, I do not think that you have received enough radiation to amount to a harmful dose. Your teacher may have been joking about not having much longer to live, but his intent was most likely to discourage you from handling the radioactive substance. If it was intended for use in the classroom, it must have been a very weak source. If you have any further doubts, have a talk with your teacher who knows more about this than I can guess from your description.
