Airborne Div
Army Airborne question?
What is the difference between the 101st Airborne division and the 82nd Airborne division? like is there a major difference or no? and like, does one Div. fly out of planes more than the other?
The 101st keeps 'Airborne' in their name because of its heritage in World War II. The 101st Airborne Division as a whole is not on airborne jump status anymore. It only has a company of Pathfinders that are still on airborne jump status. It is now known as the 'Air Assault' division. The 101st has twice as many helicopters (two aviation brigades) as any other division in the Army and can actually technically be considered one of the largest air forces in the world.
The 82nd is still on airborne jump status as an entire division (although we haven't seen a legit, large-scale combat parachute drop since Panama in 1989 and may not see one again). The 82nd has one aviation brigade.
But we no longer deploy in division-sized elements though. We now regularly deploy in brigade sized elements (i.e. Brigade Combat Teams and Combat Aviation Brigades).
So to answer your question, no. Not much of a difference. If the 82nd needs more helicopters, it will request aviation assets from another aviation unit. And more than likely if there needs to be a combat parachute jump, the 75th Ranger Regiment and 173rd Airborne Brigade in Italy will be called before the 82nd.
