What were Japanese movie go-ers like in 1947 (WWII was just over)?
My guess is that they wanted to see movies that were very patriotic and weren't negative on Japan and its military?
(I'm trying to figure out what the people thought after Kurosawa released his film adaptation of Shakespeare's Macbeth)
1947 is right in the middle of the US Occupation of Japan. All filmmaking and theater showings were strictly controlled by the Allied Occupation Forces (ie. Gen. Douglas MacArthur and the US Army). Not until 1949 is control released to the Japanese.
Japanese films made during this period were patriotic without glorifying the military, nor did they directly condemn Japanese involvement in World War II.
