How can I go about getting my grandfather's military records?
My grandfather was in the navy during WWII and the most I can get out of the government is his rank, enlistment and discharge dates. Is everything else still listed as classified? I know that he was a frogman, and that he served on all three fronts (I got that from metals and ribbons he had). He also had a handfull of metals that we can't find find in books.
What could still be so important that 60 years later they won't release? He's been dead for 30 years, so it's not a privacy thing.

If you are "next of kin" you can request the deceased veteran's entire set of military records.
If you are not next of kin, you can only get the publicly releasable records of the veteran, which will include formal schools and decorations.
Next of kin can make the request to the National Personnel Records Center located in St. Louis, Mo. You can do this online here:

Your parent that is actually the next of kin may have to make this request. If your parents are deceased, then you are next of kin.

The 1973 fire at the National Personnel Records Center in St. Louis destroyed an estimated:
80% of Army records from 1912 to 1960
75% of Air Force records from 1947 to 1964

Immediate family is next of kin as defined by the National Archives and Records Administration - National Personnel Records Center.
The NPRC will only release the entire set of records to the veteran or the deceased veteran's next of kin.
You can fill out the request online. There is a Special Instructions field in one of the several pages of small forms that must be filled out in the online request. You need to enter "please include a copy of the entire contents of the service record". If you do not type this into the "Special Instructions" field, the NPRC will only send you a copy of the Separation Papers (similar to a DD-214) and the Chonological History of Service pages, which lists units and dates served in those units.
Once the online request is completed, you print out a barcoded page. This page must be signed by the next of kin and mailed to the NPRC.
The NPRC has gotten pretty good at getting requests out within 30 days.
This is the easiest and quickest way to obtain service records for your next of kin.
